I actually recommend getting the upgrade if you decide to use it as a portfolio reference, or if you just really like the site. You also get more space in the portfolio application when you upgrade. I'd wait until you are certain you like deviantArt before you do it, though. I DO recommend the portfolio program. It is a little easier for a 1st time user to swallow than the whole site.
You need to set up your id and avatar; they're more important than you'd think for getting your work out.
Beyond that, it's a matter of tinkering until you're happy. I have a tendency to collect like mad.

Thanks for all the advice! Actually, I already have the portfolio up and paid for the better version. It was the reason I signed up in the first place and I figured since I had already paid, I should use the rest of the site. I'm hoping to have everything up within a week or so. It's going to be slow, I'm having a solo show out in Los Angeles really soon and and I'm scrambling to get the last of it together. The show was actually one of the main reasons I set the portfolio up. What is the difference between the id and avatar? If you're interested, the link to the portfolio is below.

Thanks again!

Your work is amazing!

The avatar is the tiny image which goes next to your name when you visit a page, leave a note, write a comment, etc. It's a pain to make because it has to be so small. Your id is just that: an id. It can be of anything you like.

Thanks so much! The colors in your surreal photos are great! I appreciate all of your help; I wouldn't say I'm computer illiterate, but this site does indeed seem a bit confusing.

Thanks again for everything!

Thanks for the compliment! I don't mind helping, although I get fairly easily confused here, as well. Anytime.
